About CalorieCalc
CalorieCalc is a free, open-access tool designed to help you estimate your daily calorie needs based on well-established nutrition science. Whether you are looking to lose weight, maintain your current weight, or build muscle, understanding your calorie requirements is the essential first step in any nutrition plan.
What We Provide
Our calculator estimates your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), then adjusts for your specific weight goal. We also provide a macronutrient breakdown showing how to split your calories between protein, carbohydrates, and fat based on popular and evidence-based ratio presets.
In addition to the calculator, we publish in-depth guides covering topics like TDEE calculation, calorie deficits, macronutrient ratios, calorie counting for beginners, and exercise calorie burn. We also provide worked scenarios showing how different people — from sedentary office workers to active gym-goers to new mothers — can use the calculator for their specific situation.
Methodology & Data Sources
The calculator implements two scientifically validated BMR equations:
- Mifflin-St Jeor Equation (1990): Recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as the most accurate BMR prediction equation for the general population. Published by Mifflin et al. in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
- Harris-Benedict Equation (Revised 1984): Originally published in 1919 by Harris and Benedict, revised by Roza and Shizgal in 1984. One of the most widely used BMR equations in clinical practice.
Activity multipliers are based on the Katch-McArdle activity factor scale, widely used in exercise science and nutrition planning. Goal-based calorie adjustments follow the established principle that approximately 7,700 calories equates to one kilogram of body fat.
